Compost Plant to Receive Carbon Credits

A Global First: Compost Plant at Bulta, Roopganj, Greater Dhaka is the First Large-Scale Compost Plant to Receive Carbon Credits Worth Tk. 25.67 lac

voltaThe Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an agreement with WWR Bio Fertilizer Bangladesh Ltd. to purchase 34,200 CERs, resulting from emission reductions generated by the project up to 31 December 2012. The project already received an amount worth Tk. 25.67 Lac from the sale of 7,131 CERs already issued by the UNFCCC.

In addition to this, ADB’s Future Carbon Fund (FCF) signed an agreement with the aforementioned project to purchase CERs generated from January 2013 to December 2015. This compost plant located at Bulta, Roopganj, Greater Dhaka is the world’s first large-scale compost plant based on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM);it is established by a joint venture company, WWR Bio Fertilizer Bangladesh Ltd. Together with its Dutch partners, Waste Concern under took this initiative in Bangladesh.

The Bulta compost plant has been operational since the end of 2008 and at present its capacity is 100 tons per day which will be increased to 150 tons per day within the year 2013. The plant has two major sources of revenue: one is compost (organic fertilizer), and the other is Certified Emission Reduction (CERs). From January 2009 to September 2010, this project has processed 75-100 tons of organic waste on a daily basis. Some statistics of this project are provided below:

  • Up to December 31 2012, 34,200 CERs were generated by the project from emission reductions.
  • The cumulative amount of organic waste processed during this period was 76,697 tons.
  • This facility has created 150 direct jobs for the poor; these jobs are located in the compost plant, in the transportation of waste, and in the distribution of compost.
  • The plant provides a free meal,a day care center, and free health checkup with medication
    for all workers.
