Two Day Training of Trainers (TOT) Organized for 6 (six) Municipalities organized by Waste Concern

Waste Concern in partnership with Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), Government of Bangladesh and UNICEF organized a two day long Training of Trainers (TOT) in Dhaka for 6 (six) selected pourashavas under the ongoing project entitled “Support to Project Pourashava/ Municipalities in Developing their Solid Waste Management Plan with Design and technical support for Implementation of Appropriate Intervention or Composting/ Recycling of waste” under GoB-UNICEF project.

More than 43 participants attended this two day training program during November 28-29, 2010. The participating municipalities were as follows, Rangpur, Meherpur, Sirajganj, Moulvibazar, Homna and Shibgaj. Participants represented the local municipalities, DPHE and local NGOs from. The main objective of this ToT was to introduce the participants with the concept of solid waste management plan being prepared by Waste Concern for each municipalities under the project and also provide practical demonstration on how waste can be processed into compost.

 

Day 1: On Sunday, November 28, the ToT was organized in the seminar hall of DPHE Bhaban, Kakrail, Dhaka. Engr. Nurul Islam Khan, Project Director and Engr. Md. Wali Ullah, Deputy Project Director (Urban) of GoB-UNICEF Project of DPHE, Dhaka. Mr. Monirul Alam, Project Officer of Water and Environmental Sanitation Section UNICEF Bangladesh were present in the training program.

Presentations on solid waste management situation of Bangladesh, experience of Waste Concern on composting, source separation of waste and marketing of compost were delivered by Mr. A. H. Md. Maqsood Sinha and Iftekhar Enayetullah of Waste Concern. At present working as consultant for the aforementioned GoB-UNICEF project.   Day 2: On Monday, November 29, a field trip was organized to allow participants to have hands on experience how composting is done using municipal waste. They visited two compost plants located in Katchpur and Bulta initiated by Waste Concern. The Katchpur compost plant is 10 ton/ day capacity plant is operated as a training center on waste recycling in partnership with UNESCSAP. After Katchpur plant visit, the participants were taken to the 130 ton/day Capacity Compost Plant located at Bulta in a joint venture project with the Netherlands and Bangladesh, which is based on carbon trading under the Kyoto Protocol.
